Maths

Intent:

We intend to deliver our Maths curriculum to ensure learning will prepare our children for the formal assessments they will undertake during their education, at primary, secondary and further education but also develop a love of Maths.  Our curriculum will help children to become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We aim to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry-based learning opportunities where possible.

Implementation:

We deliver the Maths curriculum daily, using short learning opportunities and lesson blocks which enable key skills to be re-visited and taught learn within a coherent and exciting framework which does not limit students’ ambitions.  New skills are taught through a variety of interesting contexts to foster enjoyment and develop a rich, deep, and secure subject knowledge. The children begin to understand what they are doing well and how they need to improve, whilst building on their understanding of the importance of British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and tolerance and respect, to help develop confidence in their own financial and numerical understanding.

Impact:

The use of our tailored LTP helps to ensure continuity across school so that all children have access to quality Maths’s teaching and resources. Learning is fun, with a mixture of practical and written work to enable opportunities for children to learn collaboratively and independently.  Our journey for Mastery Maths is in the early stages and so we are striving to work towards all children developing a love of maths that is in line with their current school age ability. As the children and staff become more confident and familiar with the approach to mastery maths, we hope for more children to be working at their age expected level as they have been keeping up, not being caught up.
