Mathematics Curriculum Statement
Intent
At St Augustine’s, our intent is to deliver a high-quality mathematics curriculum that is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to ensure all pupils become confident, fluent, and resilient mathematicians. Our curriculum is built on the principles of mastery, enabling pupils to develop a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts.
We aim to:
- Ensure all pupils develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics, including number, calculation, and place value.
- Promote mathematical reasoning and the ability to solve problems in a variety of contexts.
- Foster a positive attitude towards mathematics, encouraging curiosity, perseverance, and a belief that everyone can succeed.
- Provide opportunities for pupils to make meaningful connections across mathematical domains and with other subjects.
Our curriculum is underpinned by our Gospel Values and supports the development of key personal skills such as resilience, independence, and critical thinking.
Implementation
Mathematics is taught daily using a structured and sequenced curriculum that builds progressively from EYFS to Year 6. We follow a mastery approach, using high-quality resources and representations to support conceptual understanding and procedural fluency.
Key features of our implementation include:
- Small-step progression to ensure secure understanding before moving on.
- Use of concrete, pictorial, and abstract (CPA) approaches to deepen understanding.
- Regular opportunities for reasoning and problem-solving woven into every lesson.
- Daily fluency practice to reinforce number facts and mental strategies.
- Responsive teaching and formative assessment to address misconceptions and adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners, including those with SEND.
Teachers use precise questioning and model mathematical thinking, encouraging pupils to articulate their reasoning and explore multiple methods.
Impact
As a result of our carefully designed and implemented curriculum:
- Pupils develop a secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
- They are able to apply their knowledge confidently in a range of contexts, including real-life situations.
- Pupils demonstrate fluency, flexibility, and perseverance in their mathematical thinking.
- Outcomes in mathematics are strong, and pupils are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
- Children leave St Augustine’s with a positive attitude towards mathematics, equipped with the skills and confidence to succeed in a numerate world.
Assessment is carried out through ongoing formative assessment, pupil voice, and outcomes in books. Teachers track progress against key objectives, and subject leaders monitor provision through planning reviews, book studies, learning walks and pupil interviews.
