Climate Change and Sustainability
Climate Change and Sustainability
In 2015, Pope Francis wrote his letter 'Laudato Si', in which he called upon all mankind to be 'Stewards of the Earth'.
Pope Francis calls upon us all to look after our planet and respect nature.
At St Augustine's, we are on the journey of being more sustainable and are building on initiatives we already have running in school. To be in line with government initiatives we believe the goal of sustainability begins with educating our students in a nurturing and sustainable environment and one that is both engaging and enjoyable.
We are an inner-city school, set near to transport links and encourage the use of public transport when needed, or a much better ideal, of walking, cycling etc. Our school grounds have an abundance of trees, bushes and other natural features which creates a natural environment amidst a busy city centre.
Our curriculum is structured to ensure that sustainability topics are divided across the school year groups to ensure children are exposed to the issues the world is experiencing and how we can help to change the future.
Examples of some of the topics covered include:
Looking at food and farming, exploring how far our food travels before it arrives in the shops.
Fair Trade
World Trade and sustainability
Carbon footprint and recycling
We are trying to be as sustainable as possible by:
Replacing bulbs for more energy efficient lighting
Only having the heating on when needed
Ventilating rooms well to ensure air flow
Using recycling stations in each class for paper
Having separate food waste recycling at lunch times.
