Today we are moving onto our second unit of work, looking at Journalistic writing.

But what is journalistic writing? We did cover a lesson on journalistic writing in Autumn 1 when we wrote our Newspaper Articles on Fantastic Mr Fox.

In today's lesson, we are going to have another closer look at all the features that make up a newspaper report.

Your first task is to read the Newspaper Article I have written below. Once you have read this, I would like for you to go on a features hunt. Can you find the following features in the Newspaper Article?

  1. Is there a catchy headline?
  2. Is there an interesting subheading?
  3. Does the introductory paragraph include the 5 W's?
  4. Are there facts about the main events?
  5. Are their captions to the pictures?
  6. Is it written in the 3rd person?
  7. Is it written in the past tense?
  8. Are there any quotes and direct speech?

Annotate the newspaper article so we can see where you have found some of these features.

Today we will be looking at what skills and features we need to write our own newspaper reports.

In order to make our work the very best it can be, we need to look at how we can edit and improve our work.

For todays lesson, I have written a really bad piece of work. I would like you to go through this piece of work and improve it.

Edit and Improve a Passage Lesson with Mrs Bennett

Thursday 14th January 2021

Direct speech is something we have worked on in our last few books before Christmas. In order for us to write a fantastic newspaper report, we must include quotes of what people have been saying.

I would like you to watch the video below of me explaining how to write direct speech. Then you can have a go at writing some yourselves.

Make sure you are writing on topic about the Orangutan in my Bedroom, not just any speech you want as you will need this for Monday's lesson with Mr Hicks.

Last week I briefly introduced you to the concept of nouns and pronouns. In order to make sure our work is not repetitive, we will be replacing repeated nouns with pronouns.

Watch the lesson below of Mrs Bennett teaching you all about nouns and pronouns.
