Welcome to Year 3 from myself and Mrs Smithson-Shaw.
We hope you had a fantastic half term break and are looking forward to the last few weeks of 2017. It is an exciting time for Year 3 as they are getting ready for Christmas and all the festivities in school.
This term we are learning lots of new things. Below is an overview of some of the things we are learning about this half term.
In Year 3 there is a lot more Homework than in KS1 as their is a higher expectation from the children.
Please encourage your child to read every day and ask them questions based on what they have read. The National Literacy Foundation found that just 10 minutes of reading each day leads to a child being 13x more likely to read at or above their expected level and makes a dramatic difference to their educational attainment. Please write in your child’s Homework and Reading diary every time they read so we can continue to monitor their reading.
In class we are following a programme called Times Table Rockstars. Every day the children are completing between 50 and 60 times tables and related division problems to help build up their fluency and accuracy. Each week we focus on a different specific times table which are:
Week Beginning 6th November – 6 Times Table
Week Beginning 13th November – 7 Times Table
Week Beginning 20th November – 6 & 7 Times Table
Week Beginning 27th November – 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 Times Table
On Wednesday each week, we will also have our weekly times table test based on the same focus times table. Please help support your child learning their times tables.
Sum Dog and First News
Each week, on a Thursday, I will be setting either English or Maths homework. English homework will mainly be set through First News and Maths homework will mainly be set through Sum Dog. These are online websites adapt homework to the child’s individual ability level.
Each child has their own unique individual log in to access these websites and homework will be due for the following Thursday. This homework is not optional since it is vital the children are getting extra practice at what they are learning in school.
Each half term, the children will be set some creative homework which is completely optional, however, 10 Dojo points will be awarded for each task completed. These are aimed at allowing the children to show their creative side and also to get out in the outdoors with the family. Below is this half terms creative homework due Tuesday 19th December 2017.
On Monday afternoon and Thursday afternoon we will be teaching PE, therefore your child will need their full PE kits in school on those days (all items named). Also if your child wears earrings these will need to be removed at home or your child will need to remove them before PE. Unfortunately we are unable to take out earrings.
